Wisdom Tooth Extraction

It is a common procedure to have your wisdom teeth extracted, but you might be wondering why this occurs and what to expect.  Ease your fears by learning all there is to know about wisdom tooth extraction

What are Wisdom Teeth?

The third and final set of molars that arrive in the mouth is referred to as wisdom teeth.  They tend to arrive in your late teens or early twenties.

Some people will experience wisdom teeth that emerge through the gums with plenty of room to grow naturally.  Others will experience problems as their wisdom teeth protrude through the gums.  This is often referred to as an impacted wisdom tooth.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

When you are suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth, it may be coming in at an angle through the gum line. This leads to an intense amount of pain and discomfort.  The tooth may never emerge fully or can come in unevenly.

If impacted wisdom teeth are not treated, you can end up with structural damage to your other teeth or jawbone.  It also provides a home for additional bacteria to grow since the area is harder to reach while performing your daily cleaning.

Removal of Wisdom Teeth

To avoid any problems, your dentist will take an x-ray to determine if your wisdom teeth need to be removed.  If it is determined that you are a candidate for extraction, there is nothing to worry about.  Your dentist performs this procedure regularly and will be able to assist you through the process with minimal pain and discomfort.

After your procedure, be sure to follow all the aftercare guidelines that are given to you.  It will also help if you stick to a soft foods diet while your mouth heals.  Some foods to consider are:

Smoothies
Scrambled eggs
Soup
Pudding
Yogurt
Milkshakes
Protein Shakes
